Cyprus Federation of America 38th National Convention
The Cyprus Federation of America, Inc. held their 38th National Convention on Saturday, April 17th 2010 at Terrace on the Park, Flushing, New York. Delegates from around the U.S. representing 25 member associations took part at the convention. Addressing the delegates were His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios as well as Government representatives from the Republic of Cyprus, and Greece that included Greece's National Defense Minister Spyros Kouvelis, Cyprus Ambassador to Washington, the Honorable Andreas S. Kakouris, Greek Ambassador to Washington, the Honorable Vasilios Kaskarelis, Consul Generals of Greece & Cyprus, Aghi Balta and Koula Sophianou.
Mr. Papanicolaou thanked everyone for their continued support and he specifically referred to the work carried out in Washington to promote the Cyprus issue.
The Cyprus Federation honored Mr. Aris Demetriou a founding member of the Cyprus Federation of America and it's first treasurer and Mr. Nicko Neocleous, who served the Federation faithfully for over 15 years.s Mr. Andreas Konnaris, past CFA President, Mr. Philip Christopher, Mr. Peter Louca, Association of Asgata President, Mr. Stavros Kamilaris, Lampousa President also spoke about the honorees.
The Cyprus Federation was founded in 1951 in New York City and currently consists of 25 chapter members located throughout the United States including the Tri-State area, Virginia, Ohio, Chicago, Washington, Florida and California.
The convention’s forum allows chapter organizations the opportunity to express and exchange ideas such as the promotion of cultural, educational and social activities of the Cypriot American community.Includedon the agenda will be reports of the activities of the CFA member organizations, report of CYCA (the Youth Division ofthe CFA), the core issues of the “Cyprus Problem”, which include the withdrawal of the Turkish occupation forces, the restoration of freedom and the reunification of the island.
The Cyprus Federation of America networks closely with the Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), the International Coordinating Committee “Justice for Cyprus” (PSEKA), the American Hellenic Institute (AHI), the United Hellenic American Congress (UHAC), and the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York.
